A Time of Transition: Trusting God’s Timing

As we continue our journey through this season of transition, one thing has remained remarkably consistent for our Transition Team: a sense of peace.

That doesn’t mean the process has always been easy or predictable! We have encountered hurdles, roadblocks, delays, and extensions along the way. There have certainly been moments when we wondered, “Okay, God…what’s next?”

But through each one, we have continued to pray, listen, and trust that God is still at work—and that God is preparing the person who is meant to walk alongside our congregation during this season.

Over the past month, the Transition Team has reviewed several ministerial candidates, participated in two Zoom interviews, and met with one candidate in person. We continue to receive applications and are taking this discernment process deliberately and patiently. We don’t want to rush simply because we are eager to have someone in place. We want to prayerfully discern who is the right person to help guide Sedgefield through this particular season of our church’s life.

One of the candidates with whom we have felt a particularly strong mutual connection is currently completing an interim position and will be finishing that commitment at the end of the year. This candidate is excited about the possibility of relocating their family to North Carolina and serving alongside us during this important time of transition. Both the candidate and our committee are prayerfully considering the opportunity, the timing, and what God may be opening before us.

As we have shared with the candidates we’ve met, we are a small but mighty church!

Attendance is up. Children and young families are joining us. Those families are working hard to create a new youth group—so be on the lookout! A youth choir is getting started. Our Benevolence ministry continues to thrive. And we have been blessed by a steady group of supply ministers who have faithfully helped lead us through this season.

There is a lot happening at Sedgefield.

And while we all crave familiarity, routine, and knowing exactly what comes next, we also recognize that God is actively at work in our congregation right now. Sometimes transition can feel like standing in a doorway—not quite where we were, but not yet sure where we’re going. Yet a doorway is also an invitation to step into something new.

We don’t know exactly what the next chapter will look like. But we trust that God does.

So, for now, we will continue to pray. We will continue to listen. We will continue to welcome candidates and discern carefully. And we will continue to trust that God is paving the path before us, one step at a time, in God’s timing.

Please join the Transition Team in praying for the candidates we are considering, for our committee as we discern, and for Sedgefield Presbyterian Church as we prepare for whatever God has in store for our next chapter.

We may not know exactly where this road is leading yet.

But we trust the One who does.
